Establishing and ramping up SAF production is possibly the most challenging endeavour of all in the global journey to decarbonisation. The UK has some of the most progressive SAF policies to be found in any jurisdiction, and this has not gone unnoticed. The EU is emulating some of our approaches, and many overseas SAF project developers are focused on the UK market because of its unique focus on advanced SAF pathways (i.e., non-HEFA, non-PtL). The UK has an excellent reputation for policy-certainty and clear guidance; and any change to the existing mandate will threaten this well-earned status.

In the response to DfT’s call for evidence on the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate, we;

  • estimate the amount of advanced SAF that will become available in the early years of the SAF Mandate,
  • quantify the potential cost of any shortfall and express it as a percentage of the cost of aviation fuel, and
  • argue that changing the mandate will undermine the prospects for SAF projects under development
