- Sustainable, waste-based biofuels can be drop-in replacements for traditional marine bunker fuels, and can provide immediate and very significant emissions savings in the short-term without the need for extensive vessel modifications;
Hydrogen-based power-to-liquids (PtL) fuels including methanol are required as soon as possible across all vessel sizes;
Regulations to decarbonise the maritime sector are required immediately, and these could include a greenhouse gas intensity (GHGi) standard alongside a mandate for the use of hydrogen-based PtL fuels; and
A relatively quick and simple way to help decarbonise many sub-400GT vessels would be to amend the definition of Non Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) currently used under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) to include vessels operating at sea and on tidal estuaries and rivers.
