We anticipate the Government will be forced to increase road fuel duty. Very simplistically, this impacts not only motorists, but hauliers – whose cost increases will pass through to working people. A price signal to drivers of internal combustion engined cars, (and lighter vehicles), encouraging the transition to zero tailpipe solutions, accords with the polluter pays principle, but a blanket increase for fossil fuels and greener fuels, which impacts those with no alternatives, goes against this principle.

Our full response puts renewable and low carbon fuels in the context of the growth agenda, and contains a specific proposal which helps protect UK renewable fuels production, reduces emissions from the haulage industry and protects them from a likely fuel duty rise.
